Introduction to Mission Fields
Since the first missionaries/employees were sent out to the Gold Coast (today’s Ghana) in 1828 and to Greenland in 1833, the mission societies forming Danmission today have been working in many countries and areas. To each mission area an introduction tells the history of how the work started in the country concerned and of the extent of the contribution up to the year 2000. From time to time the mission work had to stop due to external political circumstances, elsewhere the work developed into independent Christian churches.
The texts are just a summary of the hard work the mission societies and the almost 900 missionaries made. A work sometimes under very difficult conditions, at times gratifying and successful as well. By a search in the almost 20.000 pictures of the photo archive or in the historical films you get a vivid picture of the life and working conditions of the missionaries. Information about the individual missionary is found under the item Biographies.
If you take an interest in further details on the history of mission work extensive literature and research material is available. The library of Danmission holds a big collection of books on the subject and new material is added all the time. You can visit the library (make an appointment in advance, please). Regrettable, it is not possible to take out books.
